“Mr Dual Rey Olena” is a 2021 AQHA sorrel gelding sired by the late TR Dual Rey, a son of the legendary Dual Rey, whose influence on the cutting horse industry needs little introduction, with an LTE over $350,000 and progeny earnings surpassing $5.6 million. With the recent tragic loss of TR Dual Rey, opportunities to own one of his sons become that much more meaningful.
With that being said, if you’re shopping strictly for papers, you’re missing the best part of this gelding. This horse is SAFE. Not internet-safe. Not “safe for me” safe. Legitimately safe. Oh, and at a tick under 14.3 hands, this guy tapes at 1300 pounds. He is quite literally, a bulldog.
I am very cautious with those kinds of statements because I think the horse industry throws those words around far too often. In our program, we ride hundreds of horses every year, and very few earn that level of confidence. This guy is one of them. He rides inside our indoor arena, outside in the outdoor arena, and cruises down the trails exactly the same way. Pull of the bridle and this guy will go around each way, exactly as if he had a bit in his mouth. He is not the kind that is looking for reasons to test his rider or take advantage of mistakes. Instead, he is constantly trying to do the right thing.
He is the kind you can put just about anyone on and feel comfortable doing it. He has a kind eye, a quiet demeanor, and an honest way about him that makes people instantly relax when they swing a leg over him. No buck. No rear. No drama. No nonsense. He simply goes about his business every day with the same steady attitude. He knows his leads, wants to stop, and is truly what he was bred to be: a good, honest, smart, willing horse.
Now, if you’re expecting a finished aged-event horse because of what’s on his papers, that’s not what we’re advertising. Like many horses bred this way, he was started with the intention of a performance future. Somewhere along the line, life happened, and he simply fell behind having a formal agenda. Because of that, he isn’t an exceptionally fancy show horse today, nor are we pretending he is.
What he is, however, is a 5-year-old gelding with all the age, ability, and pedigree in the world still sitting underneath him. You could call me in 1 year and tell me he winning in any discipline, and I would not even blink to believe it. Whether that’s ranch riding, versatility, sorting, trail competitions, ranch work, head side, heel side, breakaway, a calf horse, or simply becoming a dependable family horse, I just know he is going to be someone’s favorite in any of it.
Truthfully though, I think his greatest value may simply be as the horse everyone wants to ride. He’s the kind that makes horse ownership enjoyable. He, quite literally, has licked my face when I walked in his stall. He is the kind that doesn’t require a game plan every time you saddle him, and he let’s you ride instead of worrying about what might happen next. Safe horses are worth more than the price tag to buy them.
